The opening race of the 2007 season will be titled the Formula One ING Australian Grand Prix after organisers announced a three-year naming rights partnership with the financial services company today. ING, which has also recently entered into a three-year deal with the Renault team, will be the principal sponsor for the March 15-18 event at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit.

With Foster’s pulling out of Formula 1, this was expected.

BMW Sauber driver, Nick Heidfeld has revealed that the Swiss based team will have a number of modifications on their car at the San Marino Grand Prix next weekend, the fourth round in the 2006 FIA Formula One World Championship.

“We’ll be lining up with a modified rear section and a new front wing [at Imola]. Indeed, we had already introduced new aerodynamic elements for the race in Australia and the improvement was noticeable straightaway. Our aim is to make aerodynamic modifications of varying degrees before each GP. We can expect many teams to arrive for the start of the European season with revised cars, which might well bring about another shift in the balance of power.”

Ferrari and Renault took off their gloves in the first practice sessions for the Australian Grand Prix making it clear they did not intend to pull any punches in Sunday’s race .

…Michael Schumacher had the sixth best time right behind his Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, but in the second Fernando Alonso kept the accelerator of his Renault to the floor in order to finish ahead of Schumacher…

All set for the Melbourne showdown !!!
