This weekend’s German grand prix is likely to be the last at Hockenheim. Circuit spokesman Hartmut Tesseraux told ‘dpa’ on Monday that he ‘assumes’ the race is to drop off Bernie Ecclestone’s 2007 calendar.

With Spa Francorchamps to return and teams unwilling to travel to more than 18 venues each year, Germany – with two grands prix on the current schedule – along with Italy, is an obvious target for the cull. He added, however, that Hockenheim is still hopeful that Ecclestone could agree to a year-by-year alternation of the Formula One privilege with organisers of the Nurburgring event.

French racer Franck Montagny will make his grand prix race debut this weekend after replacing Japanese rookoeYuji Ide in the Super Aguri team at this weekend’s European Grand Prix.

Acting on the advice of the FIA, Super Aguri has demoted Ide to testing duties following his poor string of results so far this season.

“We accept the advice offered by the FIA to allow Yuji to accrue the mileage he requires to improve in F1 during our testing days only,” said the team’s principal Aguri Suzuki.

“It’s always especially nice to come to the Nürburgring, but this time I’m almost looking forward to it even more than usually,” he said.

But while doubts remain over the consistency of Bridgestone’s tyres, particularly on tracks where cooler temperatures prevail, the seven-time champion is convinced that he and Ferrari will be competitive everywhere from now on.

“We’re determined to deliver another good performance. Of course, the competition is strong, but so are we,” he said.
